time-blocking-exercise

It’s Monday morning!   What’s on your plate? Here’s what I need to do today

  • Create a blog (on it!)
  • Check Bills to pay
  • Sync planner with google
  • Create L.E.A.P. Group coaching training webinar
  • Follow-up with Assistant’s research
  • Send Recap follow-up for discovery calls
  • Continue with 2017 DSP workbook

Seven important projects to work on today and I’m pretty excited because I know my clients are going to love some of the projects I’m developing.

But, how am I going to get all of the above scheduled and done on my calendar today? And most of all stay disciplined to get them done?

Today I’m working in TIME BLOCKS!

With my trusty “Chicken” timer, and my time blocking exercise I plan out my day! I look at the time needed for each task on my list and create a block of time during the day that I want to accomplish each task.

For the short tasks – I use the 25 minute technique and allow myself 25 minutes of total focus! This means no email checking, no breaks for a cup of tea, just 25 minutes of solid focus! It’s amazing how 25 minutes goes so fast, and if I’m not finished the task, I turn the chicken and go for another 25 minutes of focused time.

For the longer tasks, again I like to break it down into short actions and work in 25 minute segments! This is how I get it all done!

Time blocking is an exercise I share with all my coaching clients in helping them find their own number of 3 hour blocks of time during the week. When you know you have a 3 hour block of time to work on that long to-do list, you know you will get it done! Maybe not in one fell swoop, but 25 minutes at a time.

So, here’s my suggestion for you today!   Look at your to-do list! Figure how much you can get done in a 3-hour block of time, then schedule it on your calendar. You might schedule

  • a 25 minute follow-up customer service phone block
  • a 25 minute team communication block
  • a 25 minute scheduling calendar events block
  • a 25 minute developing a team training block
  • a 25 minute plan for your next team meeting block
  • a 25 minute de-clutter your office block

Take a little break in between your 25 minute focus, get up walk around, do some sit-ups or be like me and get on my stationery bike (even for 10 mins). Sitting at your desk for 3 straight hours is NOT setting yourself up for success or even good for you body. Movement in between blocks is the key to staying healthy with good posture.

Okay, I’ve just completed my first 25 minute block and written this blog! Total focus and the bell is dinging.   Now, I’ll need another 25 minutes to get it up on the website, but you can see how time blocking is a very powerful way to get things done in your business!

It does take discipline and with no interruptions, so if you have kids at home, give them an activity to do for 25 minutes – and, yes, give them a cute timer  – and you’ll find they will enjoy the game too!strategy-session-planning
