A client messaged me she was so happy to create milestones to reach her goal following the steps outlined in the 90-day goal Playbook.    So often, we set a goal and for some reason we get deflated and lose momentum half way to the goal.  That’s because we forget about setting a few milestones along the way.

Here’s what she said:  I went to the 90 day goal workbook and I’ve got it! My goal is to Grow Contacts and Connections. I have specific numbers and I did the 30 day milestones and the brain dump. I set up my Sunday plan for this week. (Part of which is finishing the workbook.) I found an opportunity that I didn’t realize was there, to host a group of other Makers for our virtual Convention in July. Thanks so much for the reminder – I would have been unfocused for sure!

Let’s investigate how to milestones can equip you and provide you the motivation to focus on reaching your goal.

 I don’t set goals, because I never achieve them…

In my coaching business, I hear from many entrepreneurs who just don’t set goals anymore, and the main reason is because they say they never reach them.  In our conversations, I discover they have set a goal that simply overwhelms them.  This is usually because they have set a very large goal, or what I call a “high stakes” goal.  And when they begin to work on their goal, they are overcome by the enormity of the goal find it hard to take action and their motivation dwindles.

That’s where the 90-day Goals Playbook will inspire you to get into action because the answer lies in setting a few – in fact, I recommend three  milestones that breaks down your goal into bite-size pieces and when that happens you’re encouraged because you are heading in the right direction.

Milestones are what we call sub goals, or mini goals that get you to the big goal in a timely manner.  When there is a clear, recognizable milestone in sight, you get excited to celebrate and feel a sense of accomplishment.  You are simply breaking down that larger goal and setting some do-able, actionable smaller goals you can accomplish, without stress, and see the results of your hard work along the way.

Here are the reasons why milestones can equip you to take action and focus, and actually achieve your goal.

#1 Milestones keep you on track!  Along the journey to achieving your goal you are faced with distractions, and these distractions slow you down and sometimes you even lose sight of the end in mind.  Having a shorter milestone goal is a great way to keep you on track, and it helps you filter out any diversion or negative influences.  These short-term milestone goals remind us of the importance to stay focused on the path ahead.

#2 Milestones help us keep overwhelm at a distance.  If you think your big, high stakes goal is too much, you begin to lose that focus and feel like it’s never going to happen, but when you have those THREE milestones in place – laid out in a specific timely manner that you follow in the 90-day Goals Playbook,  it enables you to be more confident and encourages you to keep going.

#3  Milestones gauge progress.  I love that word “progress” it’s progress over perfection.  When you use milestones, you see the results of your efforts and maybe they’re not perfect, but this is progress.   This progress is great motivation to continue on to the next milestone.

#4  Milestones keep you accountable.  Oh boy, accountability is the linchpin to success!  When you know what you need to do in order to hit that milestone, and take responsibility in doing the work, you are disciplining yourself to be accountable.  When you achieve each of the three milestones, you are confident you’re on your way to reaching the big goal.

#5  Milestones help you re-group along the way.   Many times, we need to evaluate along the way and sometimes even change course.  Perhaps, you hit the first milestone and realize you need to change course to get to that big goal.  That’s when you’re grateful for this first milestone because you discovered a better way to reach your goal.

#6    Milestones motivate us to celebrate!  It’s important to celebrate each time we accomplish a milestone.  This is a great source of motivation to keep going knowing you are heading towards achieving that ultimate bigger goal.

If you’re still thinking goal setting is not the way for you to grow your business,  take a minute and download the 90-day Goals Playbook, and follow the steps to breaking down your goal into three milestones.

You’ll find this method of creating three milestones makes goal setting exciting and will equip you with courage, confidence and focus and that’s what ultimately grows a very successful and profitable business.
