day 15 one notebook system

What does your desk look like?

  • Are you looking for that important prospect’s name you wrote on a scrap of paper and can’t find it?
  • What about the person you met who wants a catalogue and you know you have her business card somewhere?
  • You come up with a great idea, you “thought” you wrote it down but you can’t remember where?

All this was happening to me and I was getting so frustrated. I loved sticky notes, but they were all over the place. I knew I had to have some kind of system. I was sick and tired of losing important information on my desk. I’m not sure where I got the idea, but I decided that I was NOT GOING to lose any more information and developed a ONE-NOTEBOOK system for myself.

I found that writing everything in my ONE NOTEBOOK helped me feel more confident. I wasn’t losing important information anymore. It did take a lot of discipline to keep writing “only” in one place, but it paid off. Pretty soon, people noticed my notebook and asked me about my system. So, I began to share it with others. That’s why I’m sharing it with you today. Here are the steps..

  • Get a notebook. (I use Moleskine notebooks because they fit in any purse.)one notebook latest
  • Clear all the sticky notes off your desk and put them in your ONE NOTEBOOK.
  • Find all those hidden pieces of paper and actually write a list of those ideas on one page labeled “Ideas” in your ONE NOTEBOOK.
  • Whenever you have the urge to write a reminder or note to self, write it in your ONE NOTEBOOK
  • Begin every day with a new page. This is so important. On the right hand page write the day, date and year (see example above) and then write out your to-do list for the day.
  • As you accomplish your tasks for each day, cross them out. For the ones you don’t accomplish simply transfer them to your next day “to-do” list.
  • Use the LEFT hand side of your notebook to doodle, add sticky notes or important ideas or lists of things you want to track.
  • THE BIG RULE. Never leave home without your ONE NOTEBOOK. The reason is if you hear something you want to write down, you have it with you. Instead you may write it on a piece of paper and it will get lost. Right?

The key here is discipline! Some people have multiple notebooks, but believe me, when you discipline yourself to put everything in your ONE NOTEBOOK, you’ll find you save time and money.   And, most important you’ll feel you’re not overwhelmed by all that’s happening during this busy summer when kids and distractions invade your space.

You will feel confident because you have a place to refer back to each day!

You will feel confident knowing you can follow-up with the information you’ve kept in this ONE place, your notebook.
